  • The first "international symposium on skull base meningiomas" was organized by Prof Rudolf Fahlbusch in Bamberg-Germany on June 21-22, 1992. This was not a surprise as Skull- Base Surgery was gaining ground in the 1980’s in the neurosurgical practice. More and more centers were interested in this subject and the number of operations performed was on the rise. Prof Madjid Samii organized the first international Skull Base congress in Hannover on June 17-20, 1992. Only a day after this meeting Prof Fahlbusch organized the first "international symposium on skull base meningiomas" in Bamberg. The Scientific faculty of this meeting consisted of Prof R Fahlbush, Prof O Al-Mefty, Prof LN Sekhar, and Prof M Samii. A number of neurosurgeons participated in this meeting. Quite naturally the interest in meningiomas grew parallel with the Skull Base Surgery as this and other benign tumors made up the majority of surgical pathologies in the skull base.
  • The "first international workshop on surgery of the intracranial venous system" was hosted by Prof A Hakuba on September 12-14th, 1994, at the international House in Osaka-Japan. This four day workshop was organized by the Department of Neurosurgery, Osaka City University Medical School. This was one of the commemorative events for the 50th year of the University. The organizing committee consisted of 34 distinguished Japanese Professors. Special lectures were presented by Prof LI Malis and Prof YP Huang. 92 lectures as well as 9 posters were presented by distinguished academicians from all over the world on subjects including anatomy, physiology, embryology, neuroradiology, cavernous sinus, compromise, thrombosis, obliteration, preservation, venous angioma, AVM and dural AVF.
  • Prof Al-Mefty was the first to mold the two subjects together and the "second international congress on the Cerebral Venous System and Meningiomas" was organized on March 21-25th, 1997 at the Excelsior Hotel in Little Rock, Arkansas as a conjoint meeting with the 1997, 8th Annual Meeting of the North American Skull Base Society. One day of this meeting was devoted to the Cerebral Venous System and one day to Meningiomas to be followed by two days on surgery of the lateral skull base and anterior skull base. The day on the Cerebral Venous System was chaired by Prof J Popp and the honored guest lecture was presented by Prof MG Yaşargil. 58 oral presentations as well as 4 luncheon Seminars and a 3D video clinic. Specialty topics were the deep venous system (moderated by Prof J Popp), the superficial venous system (moderated by Prof R Smith) and the resection and reconstruction of cerebral veins and sinuses (moderated by Prof M Sindou). The following day on Meningiomas was chaired by Prof R Fahlbusch and the honored guest lecture was presented by Prof K Takakura. On this second day 61 lectures were presented and 4 luncheon Seminars and a 3D video clinic. Specialty topics were current concepts (moderated by Prof R Fahlbusch), role of radiation therapy (moderated by Prof L Sekhar) and Management of Cavernous Sinus Meningiomas (moderated by Prof A Basso).
  • "The third International Congress on the Cerebral Venous System and Meningiomas" was organized by Prof S Kobayashi in May 31- June 2, 2000 in Matsumoto-Japan in conjunction with the 12th Annual Meeting of Japanese Society for Skull Base Surgery.
